A Variable Forward-Sweep Wing Design for Improved Perching in Micro Aerial Vehicles
نویسندگان
چکیده
A micro aerial vehicle with a variable forward-sweep wing is proposed with the goal of enhancing performance and controllability during high-angle-of-attack perching maneuvers. Data is presented from a series of wind tunnel experiments to quantify the aerodynamic effects of forward sweep over a range of angles of attack from -25° to +75°. A nonlinear dynamics model is constructed using the wind tunnel data to gain further insight into aircraft flight dynamics and controllability. Simulated perching trajectories optimized with a direct collocation method indicate that the forward-swept wing configuration can achieve qualitatively different lower-cost perching maneuvers than the straight wing configuration.

Planning and Control of Aggressive Maneuvers for Perching on Inclined and Vertical Surfaces
It is important to enable micro aerial vehicles to land and perch on different surfaces to save energy by cutting power to motors and to perform tasks such as persistent surveillance. In many cases, the best available surfaces may be vertical windows, walls, or inclined roof tops. In this paper, we present approaches and algorithms for aggressive maneuvering to enable perching of underactuated ...
متن کاملInvestigation of Variable Wing-Sweep for Applications in Micro Air Vehicles
Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are noted for their small size and low-Reynolds number flight regime. Because they have small mass, they are attractive for use in sensing of toxic plumes. This mission requires high aerodynamic efficiency and the ability to be quickly and easily launched. A variable-sweep wing is investigated to meet these goals. Numerical simulations are used to demonstrate that swee...
متن کاملNUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF MAVs FLAPPING WINGS IN UNSTEADY CONDITIONS
Today, Flapping Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV) are used in many different applications. Reynolds Number for this kind of aerial vehicle is about 104 ~ 105 which shows dominancy of inertial effects in comparison of viscous effects in flow field except adjacent of the solid boundaries. Due to periodic flapping stroke, fluid flow is unsteady. In addition, these creatures have some complexities in kin...
متن کاملControl Law Design for Perching an Agile MAV with Articulated Wings
This paper explores the use of variable wing dihedral and variable wing twist (in conjunction with a conventional horizontal elevator) to control an aircraft performing a perching maneuver. A choice of controller architecture wherein the dihedral is employed in the forward path and the elevator and twist are employed in the feedback path, is considered. The aircraft is modeled as a multivariabl...
متن کاملTrajectory Optimization for Perching Quadrotor Vehicles
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been carefully optimized for forward flight regimes over the past fifty years. While engineers learned to construct highly maneuverable craft to be flown by human operators, autonomous control of such highly underactuated systems has continued to be a difficult issue. New flight capabilities for aircraft have been enabled through recent advances in materials...
